Steven Heys

Steven Heys is the Head of the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. 

Professor of Surgical Oncology and an honorary consultant surgeon in the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian. Originally a general surgeon with an interest in breast disease he has recently changed clinical practice to just breast cancer with a busy clinical practice.

 He graduated in Medicine and then obtained an MD and PhD at the Rowett Research Institute, and is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Glasgow, Edinburgh and England and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

 He has almost 20 years of experience as a clinical trainer in surgery and has taken on many roles in both basic and higher surgical training, including membership of the Specialty Advisory Board in General Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has been an external examiner at several universities in the UK and has been a member of the GMC visiting teams in the QABME programme for 10 years - at the University of East Anglia (for 7 years), Edinburgh and Bristol Medical Schools. He has lead previous PMETB and GMC visits to Postgraduate Deaneries during the last 2 years and been a member of visiting teams prior to this.

 He has a specific interest in all aspects of undergraduate education and its interface with the changes in postgraduate training.

 His own research interests include the role of nutrition in carcinogenesis, and mechanisms of chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer. Current research programmes include collaborations both nationally and internationally and have resulted in 207 scientific papers and 28 book chapters being published and in addition has co-authored 4 books about the Great War.
